Chicago, Illinois – Dangerous swimming conditions are expected along Illinois beaches today as waves build to 3 to 5 feet, prompted by strong north to northeast winds behind a cold front. The risk of life-threatening currents continues through tonight, with the National Weather Service urging caution for anyone near the water.

According to the NWS, the hazardous conditions will impact mainly Illinois beaches, but moderate swim risks are also present in portions of northwest Indiana. High-risk areas include Waukegan and Evanston, with conditions expected to remain dangerous until tonight. The NWS is advising the public to avoid entering the water, especially near breakwaters, piers, and lakefront areas.

In particular, swimmers in the red zones, including Chicago, are at a significant risk of strong rip currents. Officials emphasize the importance of adhering to posted warnings and closures at affected beaches. Staying out of the water is critical, as the waves and currents can quickly become dangerous, even for experienced swimmers.

As the winds die down later tonight, the swimming conditions are expected to improve. However, continued vigilance is advised as the currents can remain strong for several hours after the worst of the storm passes.
