Hickory Hills, IL – A suspect in an alleged armed robbery was fatally shot by police in Hickory Hills Thursday night following an exchange of gunfire, authorities confirmed.
According to a statement released Friday by the Hickory Hills Police Department, officers were dispatched around 8:45 p.m. Thursday to the area of 95th Street and Roberts Road in response to a reported armed robbery. Police said they encountered a suspect fleeing the scene on foot.
The individual, allegedly armed with a handgun, reportedly fired at responding officers. One officer returned fire, and the suspect allegedly continued shooting while fleeing into an alley, police said.
Officers pursued the individual and located him in the alley with a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency aid was administered before he was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the release.
The officer involved sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital.
The Hickory Hills Police Department said the incident remains under investigation by multiple agencies, including the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. The name of the suspect has not been released pending notification of family.
Authorities have not released body camera footage or additional details regarding the number of officers involved or the specific circumstances that led to the exchange of gunfire.
