Davenport, Iowa –Heavy thunderstorms dropped more than 4 inches of rain across parts of northern Illinois and eastern Iowa late Thursday into Friday, flooding streets in the Quad Cities and leaving vehicles stranded in Moline.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, storms tracked along and north of I-80, bringing 2 to 4.5 inches of rain from Iowa City to Freeport, IL. The highest total reported was 4.12 inches near Davis in Stephenson County, IL, with widespread flooding reported between 10 and 11:30 p.m.
Scattered flash flooding was confirmed in Dubuque, Clinton, and Princeton, IL, and several downtown areas, including Davenport and Moline, saw rapid water rise. In Moline, flash flooding closed roads and left drivers stuck in deep water, especially near the Quad City International Airport, which recorded 2.71 inches.
Large hail fell in Iowa City, and damaging winds topped 75 mph near Savanna and Mount Carroll, IL, snapping trees and knocking out power. A brief tornado was also photographed near Bernard, IA. Commuters on I-80 and city streets faced dangerous travel overnight.
Residents are urged to avoid flooded roads, check for power outages, and keep phones charged for weather alerts. Authorities warn that water may rise again if more storms move through Friday night.
More rain is possible Friday, and flood warnings may be extended. Residents in low-lying areas should stay alert for updated advisories through the weekend.
