Ottawa, Illinois – Emergency sirens sounded across parts of LaSalle County Tuesday afternoon after a malfunction in equipment triggered the nuclear alert system surrounding the LaSalle Generating Station.

According to the LaSalle County Emergency Management Agency, faulty equipment activated sirens within the plant’s 10-mile emergency planning zone. Officials quickly confirmed the activation was an error and said there is no threat to the public.

The siren network is designed to warn nearby communities if a major emergency occurs at the nuclear facility. Residents in areas near Ottawa, Marseilles, Seneca and surrounding communities may have heard the alarms during the afternoon.

County officials emphasized that operations at the LaSalle Generating Station remain normal and there has been no incident or release from the plant. Emergency managers and the system vendor are reviewing the equipment malfunction that triggered the sirens.

Authorities reiterated that residents do not need to take any action related to the incident. Officials say updates will be provided if additional information becomes available.
