Chicago, Illinois – Children, seniors, and anyone with respiratory issues across Chicago and its suburbs are urged to stay indoors through Saturday night as an Air Quality Alert remains in effect for the region.
According to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, an “Air Pollution Action Day” is now extended until midnight Saturday, August 2, as ozone and particulate matter levels are expected to reach “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” on the Air Quality Index for a second straight day.
The alert covers Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage, Kendall, Grundy, and Will counties—including communities like Crystal Lake, Naperville, Aurora, Joliet, Waukegan, and Evanston. Residents, especially those with asthma or other breathing conditions, should avoid strenuous outdoor activities and keep windows closed.
Drivers are encouraged to carpool, limit engine idling, and avoid refueling during daylight hours to help reduce emissions. Public transit is recommended when possible.
High ozone is most likely in the afternoon and evening, especially near highways and busy roads. Similar summer air quality episodes have led to increased emergency room visits in the past. Air quality updates, plus steps to help reduce pollution, are available at airnow.gov.
This alert may be extended if conditions worsen. The Illinois EPA will issue new information if necessary.
