IHSA Member Schools Approve Girls Flag Football, Among Other Amendments

Springfield, IL – The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) member schools have passed a significant amendment for the introduction of a Girls Flag Football fall season. 

This decision was part of the annual by-law referendum process, concluding on December 19, 2023. The proposal, establishing a fall season from Monday of Week 6 to Saturday of Week 21, including a pre-season practice requirement of 9 practices before a contest and a regular season contest limitation of 25 games, excluding the IHSA State Series.

This development is part of a broader legislative process that saw 12 of 14 amendment proposals approved. Notably, a proposal to change football scheduling in the state did not pass. IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to address the diverse issues in Illinois high school football. The 2023 legislative process saw the highest voting turnout in over a decade, with 89.2% of member schools participating.

Other key amendments included adjustments to strength and conditioning workouts, residence by-laws for students, and the elimination of the IHSA Tournament Limitations By-law.
