Pocatello, ID – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for southern and eastern Idaho, with heavy snow and gusty winds expected to create hazardous conditions through Monday afternoon. Drivers and residents should prepare for slick roads, reduced visibility, and icy surfaces.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory covers regions including the Teton Valley, Bear Lake Valley, and Blackfoot Mountains. Snowfall totals are expected to range from 2 to 4 inches in lower valleys, with some higher elevations receiving up to 12 inches by Monday. Wind gusts could reach 45 mph, exacerbating poor visibility due to blowing and drifting snow.

The most intense weather is forecast for Sunday evening into Monday morning, with snow mixing with rain at times. Roads, particularly mountain passes and highways, may become treacherous. The Idaho Transportation Department recommends using 511.idaho.gov for real-time updates on road conditions. If traveling, allow extra time to reach your destination and use caution when navigating icy surfaces.

Temperatures will drop into the low 20s overnight, making untreated surfaces prone to freezing. Monday brings a chance of lingering snow showers in the morning before conditions clear slightly. Looking ahead to New Year’s Day, additional snow is expected, further complicating travel plans. Winds will persist, creating wind chills that feel significantly colder.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and dress warmly if venturing out. The combination of wind and snow increases the risk of hypothermia and frostbite in prolonged exposure. Stay updated by monitoring weather.gov/pocatello for changes.
