Spokane, WA – Mountain travelers in the Idaho Panhandle should prepare for hazardous winter driving conditions through Friday morning as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for higher elevations of the Central Panhandle Mountains.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, snow will continue above 3,000 feet through 10 a.m. PST Friday, with 4 to 9 inches of accumulation expected in the most impacted areas. Wind gusts of up to 30 mph may cause blowing snow and reduced visibility at times.
The advisory includes Lookout Pass, Mullan, and Dobson Pass, which are frequently traveled mountain routes connecting northern Idaho and western Montana. Road conditions in these areas are expected to be snow-covered and slippery, especially during overnight and early morning hours.
Forecasters warn that winter travel conditions could develop quickly, with slick pavement, compacted snow, and occasional low visibility. While winds are not expected to be extreme, even modest gusts could lead to drifting snow in exposed areas and along mountain ridges.
Drivers heading through mountain passes overnight or during the Friday morning commute are urged to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds, and ensure vehicles are equipped with winter tires or chains if required.
Officials also remind travelers that conditions can vary significantly with elevation, with heavier snow at higher passes and lighter amounts in nearby valleys.
The latest Idaho road conditions can be checked by calling 511 or visiting 511.idaho.gov before traveling.
