Dixie, Idaho – A powerful early-season winter storm could blanket the Clearwater Mountains with several inches of snow this weekend, creating hazardous travel and possible pass closures by Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Missoula, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Monday morning for elevations above 5,500 feet, including the Dixie area and nearby peaks near the Montana border. Forecasters say 1 to 6 inches of snow could accumulate, with locally higher totals over exposed ridges.

Travel through mountain passes could become treacherous late Saturday night and remain difficult through the weekend. The weather service warns of moderate to isolated major winter impacts, meaning normal activities may be disrupted and driving could be hazardous. Crews with Idaho Transportation Department may face delays clearing high routes, especially near U.S. 12 and Lolo Pass.

Residents and hunters heading into backcountry areas are urged to check conditions before traveling, carry emergency supplies, and prepare for rapidly changing weather. “Conditions could deteriorate quickly above 5,500 feet, especially during the overnight hours,” forecasters said.

Those in the valleys can expect rain showers, gusty winds, and temperatures dipping into the 30s by Sunday night. Motorists should plan for possible chain restrictions and allow extra travel time through the weekend.
