SANDPOINT, Idaho – A potent early-season winter storm will blanket the higher elevations of North Idaho this afternoon through early Monday, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and a risk of power outages across the northern Panhandle. The National Weather Service in Spokane has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 2 p.m. Sunday through 5 a.m. Monday for elevations above 3,000 feet, including Schweitzer Mountain Road and Eastport.
According to the NWS Spokane office, snow will intensify by late afternoon, with totals ranging from 2 to 6 inches between 3,000 and 4,000 feet and up to 12 inches at higher elevations. Winds may gust up to 40 mph, creating blowing snow and near-zero visibility on mountain roads. The combination of heavy, wet snow and strong gusts could down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages overnight.
Temperatures are expected to plunge Sunday night, allowing snow to accumulate more readily on roadways. IDOT advises drivers to delay nonessential mountain travel, especially along Highways 95 and 200 near Sandpoint and Eastport. Those venturing outdoors should prepare for single-digit wind chills and rapidly changing conditions in the backcountry.
Officials urge travelers to carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, water, food, and blankets. Motorists should slow down, keep headlights on, and avoid sudden stops or turns on slick or slushy roads.
Conditions will improve early Monday as snow showers taper, but icy spots are likely to persist during the morning commute.
