Boise, ID – An active weather pattern fueled by monsoon moisture is expected to bring multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms across southwest Idaho and portions of eastern Oregon on Tuesday, raising concerns for localized flash flooding and gusty winds.

According to the National Weather Service in Boise, numerous showers are expected during the morning hours, especially across portions of east-central Oregon and the Owyhee Mountains. As the day progresses, showers will become more scattered, with isolated to scattered thunderstorms developing during the afternoon and evening across southwest Idaho and nearby areas of southeast Oregon.

The primary concern will be locally heavy rainfall, which could produce flash flooding, particularly in and around recent wildfire burn scars where runoff develops quickly. The Weather Prediction Center has placed much of the region under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 4) for excessive rainfall.

Forecasters also warn that thunderstorms may produce gusty outflow winds between 30 and 40 mph, creating rapidly changing conditions for travelers and those with outdoor plans. Frequent lightning will accompany stronger storms, even where rainfall is brief.

While the overall risk for severe thunderstorms remains low—less than a 5% chance according to the Storm Prediction Center—any stronger storm could still produce heavy downpours capable of overwhelming low-lying or poor-drainage areas.

Residents planning outdoor recreation or travel, especially in mountainous terrain or near recent burn scars, are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts throughout the day and be prepared to move to higher ground if flash flooding develops. Never drive through flooded roadways, as water depths can be difficult to judge.
