ISLAND PARK, Idaho – Heavy snow and gusty winds are creating difficult driving conditions across the eastern Idaho high country early Monday, where a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 p.m. MDT. The system is bringing fresh snow to mountain communities and passes from Victor to Island Park and Swan Valley, with reduced visibility and slick roadways through the morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected across the Big Hole, Bear River, Caribou, and Centennial Mountains, with up to 6 inches in the higher eastern slopes near the Wyoming border. Winds are gusting to 40 mph, producing patchy blowing snow and drifting across open terrain.

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) reports snow-covered conditions on portions of U.S. Highway 26, Idaho Highway 31, and U.S. 20 between Ashton and Island Park. Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and watch for icy bridge decks and reduced visibility in heavier bursts.

Tree limbs weakened by wet snow and gusty winds could also fall, especially at higher elevations. Conditions are expected to improve late Monday afternoon as snow showers taper and winds ease.

Another weak disturbance may bring light mountain snow midweek, but calmer and drier weather is forecast for the valleys by Thursday.
