POCATELLO, Idaho – A widespread fall freeze is expected to blanket much of eastern and southern Idaho overnight Sunday into Monday morning, marking the first hard freeze of the season for many Snake River Plain communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Freeze Warning is in effect from midnight tonight to 10 a.m. Monday for the Eastern Magic Valley, Shoshone and Lava Beds area, Arco and Mud Lake Desert, and the Upper and Lower Snake River Plains, including Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Burley, Rupert, Blackfoot, Rexburg, and Carey.
Forecasters expect temperatures to dip near or below freezing, with the coldest readings in open valleys and rural areas. The chill will bring frost formation that could kill sensitive plants, damage unprotected pipes, and impact late-season crops.
Residents are urged to cover garden vegetation, bring potted plants indoors, and drain or insulate outdoor hoses and sprinkler systems before nightfall. Winds will remain light, and skies will clear, creating ideal conditions for radiational cooling and widespread frost formation.
According to the weather service, Monday will bring sunny skies and light winds, but another cold night is possible Monday night before a slow midweek warm-up. Agricultural producers across the Snake River Plain should prepare for near-freezing temperatures to become a nightly occurrence as the region transitions deeper into fall.
