Pocatello, Idaho – A Freeze Warning is in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday for much of eastern Idaho’s Snake River Plain, where temperatures may drop as low as 27 degrees in rural areas overnight. The coldest readings are expected across the Arco/Mud Lake Desert and Upper Snake River Plain, while cities such as Pocatello and Idaho Falls may hover near freezing.
According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, clear skies and light winds will allow for strong radiational cooling overnight. Rural and outlying areas will experience the most severe freeze, with widespread frost likely by sunrise. The early-season chill could kill remaining crops and harm sensitive plants, marking a significant turn toward late-fall conditions.
Residents in the warning area are urged to cover or bring indoors tender vegetation, drain irrigation lines, and protect outdoor plumbing. Farmers in Bingham, Bonneville, and Power counties should expect potential frost damage to late-harvest crops.
By mid-morning Wednesday, temperatures will recover under bright sunshine, but highs will only reach the upper 50s to near 60. Another chilly night is expected Wednesday, though readings will stay just above freezing in most populated areas.
This marks the first widespread freeze of the season for many parts of the Upper Snake River Plain, signaling the likely end of the growing season.
