Stanley, Idaho – Mountain travel across central and eastern Idaho could become extremely difficult beginning early Tuesday as heavy snow and wind target elevations above 7,000 feet.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. Wednesday for the Sawtooth/Stanley Basin, Sun Valley Region and Big Lost Highlands/Copper Basin. Snow totals between 7 and 17 inches are expected, with amounts exceeding 2 feet possible across the Sawtooths. Wind gusts up to 35 mph will increase to more than 45 mph Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, creating blowing and drifting snow along exposed ridgelines.

In the Big Hole Mountains near Victor and the Bear River Range near Emigration Summit, advisories begin at 5 a.m. Tuesday and continue through 5 p.m. Wednesday. These areas could receive 8 to 18 inches, with 8 to 10 inches expected on Emigration Summit.

High mountain routes, including Galena Summit north of Ketchum and backcountry access roads near Stanley and Copper Basin, may become snow-packed with reduced visibility. The Idaho Transportation Department urges drivers to check 511.idaho.gov for real-time conditions and carry winter supplies.

Snow and wind will peak Tuesday night into Wednesday morning before gradually easing late Wednesday afternoon. Additional travel advisories remain possible.
