Pocatello, ID – Mountain travel across central and eastern Idaho is turning slick and wind-whipped this afternoon, with up to 14 inches of additional snow piling up above 7,000 feet before conditions ease Wednesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. MST Wednesday for the Sawtooth and Stanley Basin, Sun Valley region, Big Lost Highlands, Copper Basin, Bear River Range and Big Hole Mountains. Snow totals could reach 11 inches in the Sun Valley and Stanley high country, with as much as 14 inches in the Bear River and Big Hole ranges. Wind gusts between 45 and 50 mph will create blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility along exposed ridges and passes.

Drivers heading over Galena Summit, Emigration Summit or through the Copper Basin should expect snow-packed roads and sudden crosswinds. The Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes at higher elevations could see the worst impacts, especially where drifting snow narrows lanes.

Officials urge motorists to slow down, allow extra travel time and check 511.idaho.gov for updated road conditions. Secure loose outdoor items and watch for falling tree branches in gusty areas.

Snow and wind will gradually diminish after 5 p.m. Wednesday, but slick spots may linger into Wednesday night across the highest elevations.
