Pocatello, Idaho – Mountain travel across eastern and southeastern Idaho is expected to remain hazardous through midweek as steady snowfall continues to build across several high-elevation ranges, increasing the risk of slick roads during key travel periods.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect until 5 a.m. Thursday for the Caribou Range, Big Hole Mountains, Centennial Mountains near Island Park, and the Bear River Range. Snow totals of 3 to 9 inches are expected across the Big Hole, Centennial, and Caribou ranges, while the Bear River Range could see up to 10 inches before snow tapers early Thursday.

Impacts will be most noticeable on mountain highways and passes near Island Park, Kilgore, Swan Valley, Victor, Wayan, and Emigration Summit. Snow-covered and icy roadways are likely to slow traffic, particularly during the Wednesday morning commute as overnight snowfall accumulates. Visibility may drop at times during heavier snow bands, increasing the risk of slide-offs on untreated roads.

Idaho Transportation Department officials urge drivers to reduce speeds, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking on snow-packed routes. Pedestrians in mountain communities should also use caution on icy sidewalks and driveways, where slip-and-fall injuries become more likely after repeated snowfall.

Snow is expected to gradually ease late Wednesday night, but slick conditions may persist into early Thursday morning. Motorists are encouraged to check updated road conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511.idaho.gov before traveling, as additional advisories could be extended if snowfall lingers longer than expected.
