Lewiston, ID – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Spokane is seeking a new snowfall observer to track official snow measurements near the Lewiston-Nez Perce County Regional Airport.

According to the NWS Spokane office, the position involves recording snow depth and new snowfall totals about every six hours during storms. Standard times include 4 a.m., 10 a.m., 4 p.m., and midnight. On snow-free days, no action is required.

Observers receive training, equipment, and nominal compensation of about $115 per month, plus $4 for each observation. While the payment is modest, officials emphasize the importance of consistent data for climatological records.

Measurements are ideally taken as close as possible to the airport, but locations within a couple of miles may be considered if the elevation difference is under 500 feet.

Residents interested in the role can find more details on the NWS website or contact the Spokane office directly at w-otx.webmaster@noaa.gov.

NWS officials note that reliable snowfall data is critical to forecasting, long-term climate studies, and public safety.
