Boise, Idaho – Winter travel conditions are already developing across central Idaho this morning as accumulating snow continues in the mountains, creating slick and snow-covered roads in higher elevations while valley locations see periods of rain.
According to the National Weather Service in Boise, just over an inch of snow had fallen in McCall by early morning, with snow-covered roads reported above about 5,000 feet along Highway 55. Additional snow showers are expected in the mountains through the day, which could further impact travel across higher passes and secondary roads.
Mountain communities including McCall, Cascade, Stanley, and areas near Idaho City and Lowman can expect continued snowfall, with localized accumulations making driving hazardous at times. Visibility may drop quickly in heavier snow showers, especially along Goose Creek Grade and other exposed stretches of Highway 55.
In the lower elevations, including Boise, Meridian, Nampa, and Caldwell, valley rain is expected on and off through the morning and again later this afternoon. While most precipitation will remain rain, forecasters note there is a potential for brief snow flurries in the Boise area early Thursday morning as colder air filters in.
Drivers heading into the mountains are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and carry winter safety gear. Conditions can change rapidly with elevation, even over short distances.
Snow showers gradually taper later today, but slick conditions may persist in the high country. Travelers should continue monitoring updates and road conditions before heading out, especially on mountain routes.
