Idaho Falls, Idaho – Drivers across eastern Idaho could face sudden near-zero visibility by midday Saturday as powerful winds whip dust across the Upper Snake River Plain, creating dangerous travel conditions through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a High Wind Warning is in effect from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, while a Blowing Dust Warning runs from noon through 9 p.m. across the Upper Snake River Plain, including Idaho Falls, Rexburg, and surrounding communities.
West winds are expected to strengthen to 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph, strong enough to send large plumes of dust across open farmland and desert terrain.
The biggest concern will be rapidly changing visibility along major routes including Interstate 15, U.S. Highway 20, and U.S. Highway 26. Dust clouds could suddenly drop visibility to near zero, making it difficult for drivers to see stopped traffic ahead.
Officials warn that travel may become dangerous and potentially life-threatening during the strongest wind bursts this afternoon.
Residents with respiratory conditions are encouraged to remain indoors, while motorists encountering blowing dust should pull off the road completely, turn off vehicle lights, and keep their foot off the brake until the dust passes.
The strongest winds and dust are expected to gradually weaken later tonight, though additional advisories could be issued if conditions persist.
