Stanley, Idaho – Extremely dangerous avalanche conditions are developing across central Idaho’s mountain ranges Friday as heavy snowfall and strong winds overload an already fragile snowpack, creating a serious threat to anyone traveling in the backcountry.

According to the Forest Service Sawtooth Avalanche Center in Ketchum, a Backcountry Avalanche Warning is in effect through late tonight for the Sawtooths, White Clouds, Smokys, Boulders, and Pioneers. Avalanche danger is rated HIGH, meaning both natural and human-triggered avalanches are very likely. Large slides capable of burying people, snapping mature trees, or damaging structures are possible.

The most dangerous conditions are expected near and above treeline around Stanley, Galena Summit, Smiley Creek, Trail Creek Summit, and the mountains near Atlanta. Wind-driven snow is rapidly loading steep slopes, and avalanches may be triggered remotely from flat terrain or from below steep faces. Valley bottoms are not immune, as large slides could reach roadways, trails, and buildings.

Officials strongly discourage travel in avalanche terrain. Anyone recreating outdoors should stay well clear of slopes steeper than 30 degrees and avoid runout zones beneath them. Even experienced backcountry users face life-threatening conditions.

The warning remains in effect through late tonight, with dangerous conditions expected to persist until snowfall and winds subside. Additional avalanche alerts may be issued as conditions evolve. For detailed updates, officials urge checking the Sawtooth Avalanche Center before heading outdoors.
