Pocatello, Idaho – Travel across Idaho’s higher mountain passes could turn slick within hours as snow and powerful wind gusts sweep elevations above 7,000 feet through late Wednesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. MST Wednesday for the Sawtooth and Stanley Basin, Sun Valley region, Big Lost Highlands, Copper Basin, Bear River Range and Big Hole Mountains. Snow totals will reach up to 4 inches in the Sawtooth and Sun Valley areas, including Galena Summit and Stanley, while higher peaks in the Bear River Range and Big Hole Mountains could pick up as much as 6 inches. Wind gusts may climb to 45 mph in central Idaho and up to 50 mph near Victor and Emigration Summit.
Blowing snow and crosswinds could reduce visibility on exposed roadways, especially along State Highway 75 near Galena Pass and mountain routes surrounding Ketchum and Sun Valley. Gusty winds may also bring down small tree branches, creating additional hazards.
Drivers heading over high-elevation passes should slow down, increase following distance and check 511.idaho.gov for the latest road conditions before departing. Advisories remain in place through 5 p.m., and conditions may change quickly at higher elevations.
