Pocatello, ID – Travel over Emigration Summit could become treacherous within hours as another round of heavy snow redevelops tonight and continues through early Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. Thursday for the Bear River Range. While snowfall briefly eases Tuesday afternoon, forecasters expect an additional 7 to 14 inches beginning tonight and persisting into early Thursday morning. Wind gusts could reach 45 mph at times, creating blowing snow and reduced visibility along exposed ridgelines.
Mountain routes through the Bear River Range, including approaches to Emigration Summit, will likely turn snow-packed overnight. Drifting snow may cover lanes quickly, especially during the late-night and early Wednesday travel window.
Gusty winds combined with accumulating snow could snap tree branches and lead to isolated power disruptions in higher elevations.
Drivers should delay non-essential mountain travel, carry chains and check 511.idaho.gov before departure. Conditions are expected to remain hazardous through early Thursday morning, with plow crews working to clear routes as snowfall tapers near daybreak Thursday.
