Island Park, Idaho – Snow will begin piling up on key eastern Idaho mountain passes by 8 p.m. tonight, creating slick highways and reduced visibility ahead of the Thursday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Centennial Mountains and Island Park from 8 p.m. Wednesday until 3 p.m. Thursday. Forecasters expect 5 to 10 inches of snow, with around 6 inches along higher passes. Winds could gust up to 30 mph, leading to blowing snow and drifting across exposed stretches of U.S. Highway 20.
Farther south, the Bear River Range faces heavier totals. Snow begins by 11 p.m. Wednesday and continues until 2 a.m. Friday, with 6 to 12 inches expected. Emigration Pass could see close to 9 inches, and wind gusts may reach 35 mph, reducing visibility on steep grades and switchbacks.
In the Big Hole Mountains near Victor and Pine Creek Pass, 5 to 8 inches of snow will fall from 11 p.m. Wednesday through 5 p.m. Thursday. Snow-covered pavement and compacted ice are likely by sunrise Thursday.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511.idaho.gov for live road updates. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall rates intensify Thursday afternoon.
