Soda Springs, Idaho – Mountain travel across eastern Idaho is expected to worsen again tonight as another surge of snow drops up to a foot in higher terrain before 5 a.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Bear Lake Valley, Blackfoot Mountains, Caribou Range, Big Hole Mountains, Centennial Mountains near Island Park, and the Beaverhead-Lemhi Highlands. After a brief lull Tuesday afternoon, steady snowfall redevelops tonight with 5 to 12 inches possible by early Thursday. Isolated higher totals are likely in the Big Hole Mountains and near the Montana border. Wind gusts up to 35 mph could create drifting snow and reduced visibility.

Highways through Island Park, Georgetown Summit, and mountain routes near Swan Valley and Dubois may become snow-packed overnight. Travel across U.S. 20 near Henry and state highways near Montpelier and Soda Springs could slow significantly during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.

Drivers should delay nonessential trips, carry winter survival gear and check 511.idaho.gov before departing. Snow is expected to taper toward daybreak Thursday, but slick and drifted roads may linger beyond sunrise. Additional updates are possible if snowfall intensifies.
