Boise, Idaho – Idaho ranks among the higher states for UFO sightings per capita, with one report for every 1,320 residents, reflecting consistent reports of unexplained aerial activity.

According to Casino.ca’s annual UFO sightings analysis, Idaho places within the upper tier nationwide based on data collected since 1974. The rankings compare total sightings against population, highlighting where reports are most concentrated.

Though smaller in population, Idaho has recorded hundreds of sightings across cities like Boise and Idaho Falls, as well as remote regions with minimal light pollution. Researchers say the state’s wide-open landscapes and clear night skies contribute to steady reporting levels.

Idaho is linked to one of the earliest widely cited UFO cases in the United States. In 1947, pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing a formation of fast-moving objects near Mount Rainier, near the Idaho border, an event that helped popularize the term “flying saucer.” In another case, residents across southern Idaho have reported bright lights moving erratically over desert terrain before disappearing.

More recent reports included in national databases describe hovering objects, sudden directional changes, and lights traveling at speeds inconsistent with conventional aircraft. None of the sightings have been confirmed as extraterrestrial.

Researchers point to Idaho’s low light pollution, rural visibility, and growing awareness of reporting platforms as factors contributing to its elevated rate.

Nationwide, the average chance of reporting a UFO sighting is estimated at about 1 in 1,700, placing Idaho above average.

Sightings are most frequently reported during nighttime hours, particularly by drivers, rural residents, and night-shift workers observing open skies.

Idaho’s ranking reinforces its position as a consistently active UFO reporting state in the United States, according to the latest annual data.
