Spokane, WA – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Central Idaho Panhandle Mountains through 4 p.m. Saturday, with the National Weather Service expecting periods of heavy snow above 3,000 feet and rapidly changing travel conditions along major passes.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, snowfall totals of 6 to 12 inches are expected at higher elevations, including communities and routes near Kellogg, Mullan, Wallace, Osburn, St. Maries, and Fernwood. The most significant impacts are expected over Lookout Pass and Fourth of July Pass, where snowfall rates may increase Friday and Saturday.
Forecasters say Lookout Pass will experience a brief change to rain Friday afternoon before temperatures cool again, causing precipitation to shift back to all snow Friday evening. This fluctuation may lead to wet, slushy, or icy conditions as colder air moves back into the region.
Drivers should expect winter-like travel through Saturday, especially on elevated and shaded stretches of I-90 and surrounding mountain highways. Chains or traction tires may be required at times as snow intensifies during peak travel hours.
The NWS advises motorists to carry extra food, water, and flashlights in case of delays. Idaho road condition updates are available through 511, and additional forecasts will be issued as the storm evolves.
Travelers heading to ski areas, mountain cabins, or cross-state routes are urged to allow extra time and prepare for visibility reductions, slick roads, and rapid changes in weather.
