Lookout Pass, ID – The National Weather Service in Spokane has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lookout Pass, where accumulating snow is expected to create slick and hazardous travel conditions from late Thursday night through early Friday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin around 10 p.m. Thursday across the Central Panhandle Mountains and continue through 1 p.m. Friday, bringing up to 3 inches of new accumulation along the Idaho–Montana border. Lookout Pass, located along I-90, is expected to experience the most significant impacts as colder air settles over the region overnight.

Forecasters note that even modest snowfall amounts can quickly reduce visibility at the summit, leading to slippery road surfaces and slower travel speeds for drivers crossing between Idaho and Montana. With holiday travel still ongoing, officials urge motorists to plan for additional travel time and exercise caution, especially during the Friday morning commute.

The NWS advises drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and monitor updated road conditions through Idaho’s 511 travel system. Conditions are expected to gradually improve Friday afternoon as precipitation decreases and temperatures stabilize.

While lower elevations in nearby communities are not expected to receive meaningful accumulations, mountain passes such as Lookout Pass frequently see rapid weather changes, and forecasters emphasize that travel could be hazardous for several hours overnight.

The advisory remains active until 1 p.m. PST Friday, and updates will be provided as needed. Travelers should stay alert for any shifts in timing or snowfall intensity.
