Nez Perce County, ID – A tragic head-on crash along Highway 12 has left one person dead and two others hospitalized following a two-vehicle collision near milepost 17.5.
According to the Idaho State Police, the crash occurred Monday at approximately 4:11 p.m. when a black 2025 Subaru Forester, traveling eastbound, allegedly crossed the center line and struck a westbound Ford Bronco head-on. The impact caused the Bronco to roll onto its side and catch fire, while the Subaru came to rest in the roadside ditch.
The Ford Bronco, driven by a 55-year-old Lewiston woman, had only one occupant. She was reportedly pulled from the vehicle by bystanders due to the immediate threat of fire and taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
The Subaru was occupied by an 80-year-old male driver and an 80-year-old female passenger, both from Peck. The male driver allegedly died at the scene despite emergency aid. The female passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported via air ambulance for treatment.
The collision shut down the highway for roughly four hours as emergency crews worked the scene. Officials reopened the road at 8:04 p.m. Monday. Next of kin for the deceased has been notified, and the crash remains under investigation.
Responding agencies included the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho Transportation Department, LifeFlight, and multiple fire and EMS departments from Nez Perce County and the city of Lewiston.
