Boise, ID – A powerful late-November storm system will move across Idaho from November 28–30, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions for the Black Friday weekend. The storm will mark a major pattern shift toward deep winter cold, with mountain passes and valleys alike facing significant snow impacts.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Boise and Pocatello, a moderate to high risk of heavy snow exists across central and northern Idaho beginning late Thanksgiving night. Snowfall totals of 8–16 inches are possible in the central mountains—including the Sawtooth Range, McCall, and Stanley—while the Boise metro could see 2–4 inches. Winds gusting 30–40 mph will cause drifting snow and near-whiteout conditions in open areas and higher terrain.

According to the Idaho Transportation Department, hazardous travel is likely along I-84, U.S. 20, and U.S. 95 through Saturday morning. Avalanche risks may increase in steep backcountry terrain as heavy snow accumulates quickly over a weak base layer.

Temperatures will remain 10–20 degrees below normal into early next week, with highs in the 20s and lows in the teens and single digits. Residents should prepare for power interruptions, protect exposed plumbing, and ensure vehicles are winter-ready before heading out for post-holiday travel.
