Boise, Idaho – Strong winds could make travel dangerous across parts of southwest Idaho and southeast Oregon on Sunday, with gusts up to 50 mph expected by early afternoon. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the region, warning of potential power outages and blowing dust through midnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Boise, the advisory will be in effect from noon to midnight MDT Sunday (11 a.m. to 11 p.m. PDT). Areas under the advisory include the Owyhee Mountains and Southwest Highlands in Idaho, and Harney and Malheur counties in Oregon—impacting towns such as Burns, Silver City, Murphy Hot Springs, and Crane.
High-profile vehicles on open stretches of U.S. Route 20 and Highway 95 may face dangerous crosswinds. Tree limbs could snap under pressure, and visibility may drop rapidly due to airborne dust, especially in rural and desert areas.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices in case of outages, and avoid unnecessary driving during peak gust hours. The last wind event of this strength in the region occurred in spring 2023 and caused several traffic incidents near Burns.
The advisory remains active through Sunday night. Additional weather alerts may be issued if conditions worsen.
