Lolo, Montana – Travelers crossing high-elevation routes in western Montana and central Idaho this weekend could face hazardous conditions as a late-season winter storm moves in Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Missoula, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Saturday through Sunday afternoon for elevations above 5,000 feet, including Lolo Pass, Lost Trail Pass, and Lemhi Pass. Forecasters say there’s at least a 50% chance of moderate to major snow impacts in these mountain corridors, with totals reaching up to 6 inches in some areas.
Roads like Highway 93 from Sula to Gibbonsville, Highway 28 near Tendoy, and Williams Creek Summit may become treacherous or impassable. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary mountain travel during the storm window. Even moderate snowfall could trigger road closures or delays, especially along narrow mountain passes.
Residents in Ravalli and Lemhi counties should prepare for possible infrastructure disruptions and limited access to high-country areas. If travel is essential, pack emergency supplies, charge cell phones, and check road conditions frequently.
Snow is expected to taper off by Sunday evening, but additional advisories may follow depending on storm intensity. Mountain travelers should monitor updates through the weekend.
