LEWISTON, Idaho – Thick wildfire smoke is pushing air quality into the unhealthy range across north-central Idaho through Monday morning, with officials warning residents to limit outdoor activity.
According to the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality and the Nez Perce Tribe’s Air Quality Program, the advisory covers Clearwater, Idaho, Latah, Lewis, and Nez Perce counties, including the cities of Lewiston, Moscow, Kamiah, Craigmont, and Lapwai. The Air Quality Index is expected to remain between “Unhealthy” and “Very Unhealthy” levels until early Monday.
Health agencies said the smoke poses the greatest risk to children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with asthma, heart disease, or other breathing problems. Outdoor workers and those who spend extended time outside are also at higher risk. Residents are urged to stay indoors with windows closed, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and use air purifiers or masks if available.
The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare recommends that sensitive groups avoid exposure altogether. Everyone is encouraged to limit time outdoors until conditions improve.
More advisories may be issued if wildfire smoke persists into the week. For updates, residents can call the Idaho Smoke Information Hotline at 1-800-345-1007.
