Chicago, IL – Freezing rain is set to create hazardous travel conditions across northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana this afternoon and tonight. Ice accumulation will make roads, sidewalks, and parking lots slick, increasing the risk of accidents.
According to the National Weather Service Chicago, freezing rain will begin between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. across the region. Ice accumulation is expected, particularly on untreated surfaces. The freezing rain will end between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., but icy conditions may persist into the morning commute.
Temperatures will rise above freezing Thursday and Friday, improving conditions. However, another wintry mix is expected Friday night into Saturday, bringing more potential travel disruptions. Blustery winds on Thursday will add to driving challenges.
Drivers should reduce speeds and use caution on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. Pedestrians should watch for slick sidewalks and parking lots. Road crews are treating major highways, but secondary roads may remain icy.
Monitor local forecasts before traveling, and allow extra time if heading out.
