Buffalo, NY – The National Weather Service in Buffalo is warning drivers to prepare for icy roads tonight as rain transitions to snow and temperatures fall below freezing across western New York. The combination of wet pavement and rapidly cooling air is expected to create slick conditions, especially on bridges, ramps, and overpasses, which may freeze first.

According to the NWS, mixed precipitation will change to all snow between 6 p.m. and midnight, with light snow accumulations possible across the Buffalo metro, Niagara Falls, and Rochester areas. Forecasts show temperatures dropping steadily through the evening—from the mid-30s at sunset to the upper 20s by midnight and into the low 20s by early Monday morning.

Areas receiving earlier rain may experience the most dangerous road conditions as moisture freezes quickly once surface temperatures dip below 32°F. Snow amounts are expected to remain light, generally 1 inch or less, but even minor snowfall could add to travel hazards overnight.

The National Weather Service urges motorists to drive slowly and use caution if traveling late tonight or early Monday morning, as untreated and shaded roadways may become icy.
