Grand Forks, ND – Travelers in northwest Minnesota and eastern North Dakota should prepare for hazardous conditions as snow and freezing rain sweep the region. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 3 p.m. today, with freezing rain potentially glazing roads with up to 0.1 inches of ice, making travel dangerous.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), freezing rain will transition to snow by late afternoon. Areas near Lake of the Woods and Highway 2 may see 4-6 inches of snow accumulation by Monday. Reduced visibility and slippery roads could lead to travel delays, especially on highways and rural routes. Drivers are urged to check road conditions at mn511.org or travel.dot.nd.gov before heading out.

Tonight, temperatures will plummet to 22°F with strong northwest winds gusting up to 39 mph, causing patchy blowing snow and dangerous wind chills. By Monday, snowfall will taper off, but blustery winds will continue, with new snow accumulation under an inch expected.

Looking ahead, Tuesday remains cold, with highs near 16°F and lows plunging to -9°F. Wednesday will offer some relief, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 4°F, but travel could remain challenging.

Residents are encouraged to stock up on essentials and ensure vehicles are equipped for winter weather. Avoid non-essential travel during peak icing and snow conditions to stay safe.
