Rutland, VT – An ongoing ice storm is threatening parts of central Vermont and northern New York with up to two-tenths of an inch of additional ice accumulation through 8 p.m. Sunday, raising the risk of hazardous travel, falling tree limbs, and extended power outages.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the Ice Storm Warning remains active for areas including Rutland, Ticonderoga, and Saranac Lake. Freezing rain will gradually change to plain rain this afternoon, but not before adding more glaze to already slick roads and heavily burdened power lines.

Counties under warning include Western and Eastern Essex in New York, as well as Addison, Rutland, Orange, and Windsor counties in Vermont. Communities such as Middlebury, Killington, White River Junction, and Lake Placid are all under threat of icing conditions. In nearby southern Franklin and St. Lawrence counties, ice accumulation is expected to linger into the evening near the St. Lawrence River.

Residents are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Drivers who must venture out should carry extra food, water, and a flashlight in case of emergency.
