Aberdeen, SD – The National Weather Service in Aberdeen has issued an Ice Storm Warning for Corson County, including the city of McIntosh, in effect from 8 p.m. MST Wednesday, December 10th, through 5 p.m. Thursday, December 11th.

Forecasters warn that a significant icing event is expected as freezing rain overspreads the area overnight. Ice accumulations of one-tenth to three-tenths of an inch are anticipated, along with a light coating of snow up to one inch.

The combination of freezing rain, snow, and gusty winds will create extremely hazardous conditions, with the potential for widespread power outages due to ice buildup on trees and power lines. Roads, bridges, and overpasses will quickly become slick, and travel could become nearly impossible at times.

Residents are urged to avoid all nonessential travel and to prepare for the possibility of extended power interruptions. Those who must travel should carry an emergency winter kit that includes extra food, water, blankets, and a flashlight.

The most hazardous period is expected to occur overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning, potentially impacting both the morning and evening commutes.

Officials advise monitoring 511 South Dakota for the latest road conditions and visiting weather.gov/abr for forecast updates.

This storm could be one of the more impactful icing events of the season so far for north-central South Dakota.
