Chanhassen, Minnesota – Freezing drizzle is expected to create slick and hazardous travel conditions across central Minnesota beginning Thursday afternoon, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory through early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen, the advisory is in effect from 3 p.m. CST Thursday to 6 a.m. CST Friday for Benton, Morrison, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd, Mille Lacs, and Douglas Counties.

Communities included in the advisory area include St. Cloud, Sauk Rapids, Elk River, Alexandria, Long Prairie, Little Falls, and Princeton.

Forecasters say freezing drizzle will develop this afternoon and continue overnight, resulting in ice accumulations of a light glaze up to around one tenth of an inch. The ice is expected to form primarily on untreated roads, bridges, sidewalks, and parking lots, increasing the risk of travel disruptions during the evening and overnight hours.

The National Weather Service warns that holiday travel could be impacted, particularly for drivers traveling Christmas night. Warming temperatures early Friday morning are expected to bring the freezing drizzle threat to an end.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use caution when traveling. Drivers can check current road conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511mn.org before heading out.

Winter Weather Advisories are issued when winter conditions are expected to cause travel difficulties and minor disruptions, especially during periods of increased traffic.
