State College, PA — A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of central and north-central Pennsylvania as freezing rain develops Sunday afternoon and continues into late tonight.
The National Weather Service State College reports that the advisory is valid from 1 p.m. Sunday until 1 a.m. Monday for areas including Williamsport, Wellsboro, Mansfield, Laporte, Lock Haven, Lewisburg, Bloomsburg, Pottsville, Sunbury, and surrounding communities.
Periods of freezing rain are expected to overspread the region this afternoon, with ice accumulations up to two tenths of an inch possible in Tioga, Sullivan, and Lycoming Counties, and up to one tenth of an inch elsewhere across central Pennsylvania.
While ice amounts are expected to remain relatively light, even small accumulations can create slick and hazardous travel conditions, particularly on bridges, overpasses, untreated roads, sidewalks, and stairways. Travel may become difficult at times, especially during the late afternoon and evening hours.
Temperatures are forecast to gradually rise overnight into Monday morning, which should bring an end to freezing rain and help improve road conditions by early Monday.
Residents are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution when walking outdoors to reduce the risk of slips and falls.
