Pennsylvania – Sidewalks shine like glass and untreated roads feel slick underfoot as freezing drizzle clings to central Pennsylvania. Even light steps demand caution early, and travel conditions remain hazardous as winter weather tightens its grip during the busy holiday stretch.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning. Areas of freezing drizzle continue through daybreak, producing a light glaze of ice. Visibility remains fair, but surfaces stay dangerously slick, especially on bridges, shaded roads, and sidewalks.

State College, Altoona, Clearfield, Lewistown, and surrounding communities face the greatest risk during the morning hours. PennDOT crews continue treatment efforts, but icy patches may persist longer on less-traveled roads. Plan extra time if heading out, and use extreme caution when walking or driving.

Conditions improve gradually as temperatures climb above freezing later, but the break is brief. Showers return Sunday, followed by a renewed wintry mix Sunday night as colder air pushes back in. Rain may mix with snow, with little accumulation expected, yet another round of refreezing is possible as temperatures drop into the 20s.

Monday brings scattered snow showers and gusty winds, reinforcing a colder pattern that settles in for much of the upcoming week. While snow totals remain light, repeated melt-and-freeze cycles increase black ice concerns, particularly during early mornings and late evenings.

Looking ahead, New Year’s Eve Wednesday trends cold with lingering snow chances during the day. New Year’s Day 2026 stays wintry, offering quieter weather but icy mornings across central Pennsylvania.

Meteorologists continue monitoring the evolving pattern, and additional advisories may be issued as winter systems pass through.
