Florida – Brake lights blur into red smears this morning as dense fog blankets northeast Florida. Visibility drops fast, sometimes to a quarter mile or less, making early travel risky across Jacksonville and surrounding coastal communities.

According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through early afternoon. Calm winds and high humidity allow fog to thicken, especially near waterways, low-lying neighborhoods, and inland coastal routes. Visibility may improve briefly, then deteriorate again without warning.

Drivers across Jacksonville, Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach, and St. Augustine should expect sudden slowdowns. Major corridors including I-95, I-10, and surface roads near the St. Johns River remain vulnerable. Bridges and causeways are especially hazardous where fog becomes locally thicker.

Temperatures stay mild, hovering in the 60s early and warming quickly once fog lifts. By late morning, sunshine breaks through and visibility improves. Conditions turn quiet heading into the weekend, with warm afternoons and mostly clear nights.

Saturday brings patchy morning fog again in some areas, followed by sunshine and highs near 80. Sunday stays warm with a slight chance of showers, though most of the day remains usable for outdoor plans. While winter headlines dominate much of the country, northeast Florida’s main hazard right now is visibility, not cold.

Travel smart this morning. Slow down, use low-beam headlights, and increase following distance. Conditions can change block by block, especially near the coast and river crossings.

More daylight is on the way as January progresses, but for now, patience is key during the morning commute.
