Delaware – Cold air bites hard along the Christina River, and the stillness won’t last. Clouds thicken as moisture pushes north, setting up a dangerous winter storm that will quickly turn roads slick and travel risky across northern Delaware.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning, with wind chills dropping as low as six below zero. A Winter Storm Warning follows from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon. Heavy snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain is expected, with total snow and sleet accumulations between seven and 13 inches across northern Delaware and nearby areas.

In Wilmington, snow develops Sunday morning and becomes heavier by afternoon. Periods of sleet and freezing rain may mix in during the evening, increasing the risk of ice buildup on trees and power lines. Ice accumulations up to three-tenths of an inch could lead to scattered outages. Gusty winds will reduce visibility and create blowing snow, especially on exposed roadways.

Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly late Sunday and remain hazardous into the Monday morning commute. I-95, Route 202, and local bridges may become nearly impassable at times. Even brief melting during daylight hours could lead to flash freezing once temperatures drop again. Drivers should plan extra time, slow down, or delay non-essential travel.

Cold air lingers into midweek. NOAA outlooks point to below-normal temperatures holding across the Mid-Atlantic, while precipitation chances drop after this system moves out.
