Michigan — Snowflakes streak sideways across dark pavement this morning as gusty winds whip through Detroit. Headlights catch blowing snow, while untreated roads glaze over fast. Winter tightens its grip early on this MLK Day, and conditions are changing quickly.

The National Weather Service has a Winter Weather Advisory in effect across southeast Michigan through Tuesday morning. Snow showers continue today, bringing 1 to 2 inches of accumulation, with isolated higher totals possible. Brief snow squalls may reduce visibility suddenly, especially along I-94, I-75, and the M-59 corridor. Winds gust between 40 and 45 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow.

Temperatures remain bitter. Readings hover in the teens this morning, while wind chills plunge to 10 to 15 degrees below zero at times. Even short exposure feels harsh. Drivers should plan extra travel time and expect slick bridges, ramps, and side streets. As snow melts briefly during the day, refreezing tonight raises the risk for black ice.

Snow chances ease slightly Tuesday, but cold air stays locked in place. Wind chills remain well below zero early, and another round of accumulating snow is possible by Wednesday morning. That midweek system could impact the morning commute again, especially in metro Detroit and nearby suburbs.

Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook shows below-normal temperatures persisting across the Great Lakes, with periodic snow chances continuing into late January. Winter is far from finished, and travel disruptions may stack up quickly with each passing system.

Slow down today. Dress in layers. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. Conditions may deteriorate fast during heavier snow bursts.
