Snowflakes whip through the Twin Cities skyline this morning, marking one of the season’s first true winter punches across southern and central Minnesota. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect as a powerful clipper system barrels through, bringing 4 to 7 inches of snow, gusts up to 40 mph, and a messy mix of sleet and ice for some by evening.
The National Weather Service in Chanhassen warns that the heaviest snow will fall along and north of Interstate 94, where bands may pile up quickly through tonight. South of that line — including much of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metro — expect a slushy wintry mix before colder air flips precipitation back to snow. The Tuesday evening commute could become treacherous, with reduced visibility, slick bridges, and drifting snow in open areas.
By late Tuesday night into early Wednesday, winds shift northwest, ushering in bitter, blowing conditions and temperatures dropping into the teens. Snow will taper, but the gusty 35–40 mph winds may keep roads snow-covered and icy into the Wednesday morning drive.
Travelers along I-94, I-35, and Highway 52 should plan extra time, reduce speed, and pack emergency kits. Plow crews are expected to work through the night as snow bands and blowing drifts persist.
Looking ahead, temperatures stay well below freezing through the weekend. Thursday brings highs in the upper teens, with another light snow chance Friday before a frigid Saturday in the single digits — a sharp reminder that December has truly arrived in the North Star State.
