La Crosse, WI – Drivers across western Wisconsin may encounter slick and slushy travel conditions early this morning as a wintry mix moves through the region, especially near the Interstate 94 corridor. Light rain and snow will continue through about 8 a.m., bringing patchy travel disruptions and slippery spots.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in La Crosse, a band of mixed precipitation is stretching from southeastern Minnesota into western and central Wisconsin. While warmer surface temperatures have kept most snow from accumulating significantly, elevated surfaces are more vulnerable. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads could become slick quickly as the wintry mix drifts east.
Radar imagery early this morning shows rain across Rochester, Mason City, and Decorah, with wintry precipitation increasing closer to Eau Claire, Tomah, and Stevens Point. Slushy patches may develop, especially where brief bursts of snow or sleet mix in with rain.
NWS forecasters emphasize that conditions may vary rapidly over short distances, making travel unpredictable at times. Even minor accumulations can create hazardous situations when temperatures hover near freezing. Motorists are encouraged to slow down, increase following distance, and check updated road conditions before heading out.
While the precipitation will gradually taper after 8 a.m., lingering moisture and cold surfaces could continue to cause localized slick spots through mid-morning. Commuters using I-94, Highway 53, and surrounding routes should plan for extra time.
Residents in La Crosse, Winona, Eau Claire, and nearby communities should remain alert for changing conditions as this system passes.
