Minneapolis, MN – The Twin Cities are bracing for a volatile mix of snow, wind, and cold this week as a strong storm system tracks across Minnesota. The National Weather Service in Chanhassen reports that snow will develop Tuesday morning north of the I-94 corridor, with a wintry mix or rain likely along and south of I-94.
According to forecasters, an intense band of snow producing 1–2 inches per hour is expected to form northeast of the system’s low track Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning. Areas north of I-94 — including St. Cloud, Brainerd, and Hinckley — face a 60–80% chance of 4+ inches of accumulation. A tight snowfall gradient means totals could vary dramatically within just a few miles.
By Tuesday night, wind gusts could exceed 40–45 mph across western and southern Minnesota, reducing visibility and creating hazardous travel conditions. Temperatures will plunge behind the system, with highs only in the teens and lows below zero by midweek.
Residents are urged to prepare for rapidly changing conditions, especially during the Tuesday evening commute, and to limit travel in areas expecting heavier snow and freezing rain.
