Detroit, MI – A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect this afternoon for areas east of US-23, where 4–6 inches of snow, and locally up to 7 inches, are expected through Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Detroit/Pontiac.
The advisory begins at 3 PM today and includes Huron, Tuscola, Sanilac, Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Oakland, Macomb, Wayne, and Monroe Counties—covering cities such as Detroit, Flint, Pontiac, Port Huron, Warren, Monroe, and Caro.
Light snow will spread into the area between 1 PM and 5 PM, increasing during the evening commute. The heaviest snowfall is expected between 7 PM and 2 AM, when rates may reach 0.5 inches per hour, with brief bursts up to 1 inch per hour near and south of I-94. Snow will continue overnight before tapering off Sunday morning.
Road conditions will deteriorate quickly after sunset as snow begins to accumulate on highways and untreated surfaces. Travel could become very difficult, especially within the Detroit metro area and along major routes including I-75, I-94, I-96, and M-59.
NWS advises drivers to slow down, leave extra distance, and use caution on bridges, ramps, and sidewalks, which may become icy. Local residents are also urged to watch for slick steps and driveways when walking outside.
