Wisconsin — A dull winter sky presses low over the Mississippi River this morning, and light flakes drift quietly through the cold air. Conditions look manageable at first glance, but subtle hazards are developing as the region closes out 2025.

The National Weather Service reports periods of light snow and patchy freezing drizzle today across the La Crosse area. Accumulations remain minor, generally one inch or less. Even so, temperatures near and below freezing raise the risk for slick travel, especially where drizzle lightly glazes pavement.

Roads may change quickly during the morning and early afternoon. Bridges, shaded stretches, and untreated streets could become slippery with little warning. Drivers on I-90 and nearby highways should reduce speed and increase following distance.

Snow tapers later today, but cold air tightens its grip tonight. Skies partially clear, and temperatures drop sharply. Wind chills dip below zero by early New Year’s Day 2026, making it feel bitter for anyone outdoors. Any moisture left on roads may refreeze, creating black ice before sunrise.

New Year’s Day stays dry and quiet. Sunshine helps briefly, yet highs only reach the mid-teens. Winds remain light, but the cold still bites. Outdoor plans should be short, layered, and planned carefully.

By Friday, conditions improve slightly. Skies stay mostly sunny, and highs climb toward 20. The first weekend of 2026 looks calm but cold. Saturday and Sunday remain dry with highs in the low to upper 20s. Overnight refreezing continues to pose travel concerns after sunset.

Plan ahead today. Watch road conditions closely, dress for the cold, and allow extra time if traveling.
