LA CROSSE, WI — A gray sky and light flakes drift over the Mississippi River Valley this morning as western Wisconsin slides into another round of early winter weather. The National Weather Service in La Crosse reports that snow chances increase through this afternoon, with light accumulation and slippery travel expected on bridges and untreated roads before clearing later tonight.
Temperatures hover near 22°F, and winds from the southwest add a sharp bite to the air. Even though snow totals stay under half an inch, the combination of light snow and subfreezing pavement will make travel tricky along I-90, U.S. 14, and County B by late afternoon.
Tuesday will bring a brief break with sunshine and calmer winds, but by Wednesday, another round of flurries and falling temperatures returns. Lows midweek are forecast to drop below zero, with wind chills between -10°F and -20°F possible late Wednesday into Thursday morning.
Residents should prepare for flash freezing as melting snow refreezes each evening, a classic early-December hazard. Keep an ice scraper handy, check tire pressure, and allow extra time for morning commutes.
